UNCW officials announced Monday that John Fields has enrolled in summer classes and will have two seasons of eligibility with the Seahawks beginning in 2009-10.

The 6-foot-9, 200-pound Fields played high school ball in Fayetteville and averaged 9.6 points and 5.5 rebounds for East Carolina last season, ranking second on the team in both categories. Under NCAA transfer rules, he must sit out the 2008-09 season.

UNC-Wilmington coach Benny Moss says Fields will use this season to learn the program and will be "an integral part of our team" once he's eligible to play.

AKRON PLAYER ARRESTED IN SHOOTING: Akron basketball player Rydell Brooks was arrested early Sunday after shooting at police officers during a foot chase following a traffic stop.

Akron police said the 20-year-old Brooks ran from a car and fired several times as police officers chased him. He was being held in Summit County Jail and faces attempted murder and felonious assault charges.

NIGERIANS WILL GET SHOES: IUPUI coach Ron Hunter and his players are going to Nigeria in July to deliver some of the nearly 200,000 pairs of shoes that were donated after he went barefoot during a basketball game to help poor children.

Samaritan's Feet, a charitable organization based in Charlotte, persuaded Hunter to go barefoot for a Jan. 24 game against Oakland, Mich., and Hunter set a pregame goal of collecting 40,000 pairs of shoes in honor of the 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

By tipoff, he'd already raised 110,000 pairs, counting those that had been pledged on the Samaritan's Feet Web site.

FOOTBALL

NOLES PENALIZE PARKER: Florida State receiver Preston Parker will have to sit out the first two games of the 2008 season after pleading guilty Monday to two misdemeanor charges.

Parker, 21, was arrested in April on a felony charge for allegedly having a loaded .45-caliber pistol in the dashboard of his car. The charge was reduced to a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

At the time of his arrest, Parker was also charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, to which he also pleaded guilty in Palm Beach County.

Parker scored five touchdowns last year. He caught a team-leading 62 passes, was second on the Seminoles in rushing and was Florida State's main punt returner.

He will sit out games against Western Carolina and Chattanooga and return to play against Wake Forest.

VINCENT WON'T PLAY FOR TIGERS: Suspended Clemson linebacker Cortney Vincent will not return for the 2008 season.

Vincent was suspended for spring practice for an unspecified violation of team rules.

Coach Tommy Bowden said in a news release Monday that Vincent would have been academically eligible to compete in the fall but did not meet goals set by the team for the spring.

Vincent started 12 games last season and had 68 tackles and two sacks.

Clemson also announced that wide receiver Jeff Ogren will transfer to another school.
