East Carolina sophomore quarterback Rob Kass was arrested over the weekend on charges of driving while impaired after he was stopped at a police checkpoint several miles from the university's main campus.
He was found to have more than two times the legal limit of alcohol in his system, police said.
Kass, 20, is projected as ECU's starting quarterback as the Pirates head into Saturday's season-opener at No. 5 Virginia Tech. ECU coach Skip Holtz said Monday at a news conference that he was not ready to address Kass' situation publicly. He said he would handle the matter internally and possibly address it publicly by Wednesday.
"I know there's been a lot made of the Rob Kass situation from a public standpoint," Holtz said. "It is something that we've been made aware of and known about for a couple days. ... [athletics director Terry] Holland and myself have talked about it.
"I've visited with Rob, but at this point I'm not ready to address it publicly. When I am ready to address it publicly, I will."
Kass, a native of Longwood, Fla., was arrested at 1:28 a.m. Saturday. He was stopped at a police checkpoint on East 5th Street near Green Springs Park in Greenville.
Greenville police officer Maj. Kevin Smeltzer said Kass was driving a black 2003 Dodge Ram four-door truck. Smeltzer said an officer smelled alcohol on Kass and requested he blow into a breathalyzer.
Kass was placed under arrest after he registered .19 level of intoxication, Smeltzer said. The state's legal limit is .08.
Smeltzer said Kass was also charged with provisional DWI because he is under the legal age to drink alcohol.
Kass' court date is set for Nov. 13.
It is uncertain what impact Kass' arrest will have on the Pirates leading into this weekend's game against the Hokies.
A national spotlight will shine on the game in Blacksburg, Va., which is the first major sporting event on campus since a student gunmen killed 32 people and himself on April 16.
The Pirates, coming off an inspiring winning season, enter this contest with several unproven players at crucial positions, including quarterback, where Brett Clay and Patrick Pinkney have battled Kass for the starting job.
Kass, a 6-foot-4, 247-pound redshirt sophomore, seemed to grab hold of the starting spot after a strong spring practice season.
"There hasn't been a lot of difference between Brett [Clay] and Rob [Kass]," Holtz said. "It's been an up-and-down, back-and-forth type of thing. ... I feel like we have three quarterbacks that we can play with."
