Pilots eliminate Wolfpack men in NCAA soccer

The N.C. State men's soccer team had its chances.

But it rarely had momentum.

The University of Portland seized control early and left Dail Soccer Field with a 2-1 victory over N.C. State in the second round of the NCAA Soccer Championship.

Nicholls State (0-3) at New Mexico (2-0)

GAME NOTES: The New Mexico Lobos assume the role of host in the Basketball Travelers World Vision Classic, when they entertain the Nicholls State Colonels in a non-conference game at The Pit. It's the first meeting between the two schools. The four-team round-robin tournament continues through Sunday and also includes Miami-Ohio and Louisiana Tech.

The Colonels might be better named the Road Warriors. Nicholls State is playing its first eight games on the road and won't play on its home court until December 3rd. The Colonels dropped a 92-60 decision at Houston on Tuesday in their last outing to fall to 0-3 on the young season.

New Mexico is back home after a high-flying 97-87 win at arch-rival New Mexico State in its last game on Tuesday. With the win, the team moved to 2-0 on the year.

Clemson can't help being Clemson. Of all people, the guy who covers the ACC should know this. The Tigers were one of three losses in Thursday's anticipated but not all the exciting first day of the NCAA Tournament.

Wall nails winner

John Wall proved to be worth the wait.

The heralded Kentucky freshman from Raleigh scored 19 points - including the winning jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining - to lift the fourth-ranked Wildcats (2-0) to a 72-70 win over Miami of Ohio on Monday night.

After Miami's Kenny Hayes hit a 3-pointer to tie at 70 with six seconds left, Wall raced down the floor and pulled up from the wing. The ball fell through the net and Wall raced up the floor pounding his chest in celebration as the crowd roared.
