Wolfpack men lead at ACC track meet

Distance runners make the difference

N.C. State, led by three top-five finishes in the steeplechase, currently stands in first place after the second day of the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta.

The Virginia Tech women continued their strong performance, finishing the evening with a 27-point lead over Virginia.

The Wolfpack, which earned 18 points with a 1-2 finish in the 10,000-meter run Thursday evening, were similarly impressive in Friday's longest event, the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Senior Tibor Vegh finished second for the Pack, while teammates John Martinez and Gavin Coombs finished third and fourth, picking up a total of 19 points for State.

Also scoring for State were Dexter Adams, who came in second in the long jump, and Eric Davis and Jason Jones, who finished sixth and fourth, respectively, in the high jump and the shot put.

UNC's Donte Nall won the high jump.

TENNIS

ACC WOMEN: Quarterfinal action ended with sixth-seeded Florida State upending No. 3 seed Miami at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Other teams advancing to today's semifinals are defending champion Georgia Tech, Duke and Clemson.

Florida State will face Duke at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils, who edged the Seminoles 4-3 during the regular season, are 5-0 over FSU in league tournament history.

Duke returns to the semifinal round of the ACC championship after missing it for the first time in '07 as second-seeded Duke beat seventh-seeded Virginia 4-1.

ACC MEN: Three of the four top seeds reached today's semifinal round at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Today's matches feature Wake Forest vs. Virginia at 10 a.m., followed by Miami vs. Florida State at 1 p.m.

Wake Forest and Virginia meet in the semifinals for the second straight year and third time in the past four years.

CIAA WOMEN: Livia Oliveira of Shaw will take on CIAA player of the year Ines Nieves of Fayetteville State today in Petersburg, Va., for the No. 1 singles title.

Oliveira advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Johnson C. Smith's Jennifer Lee.

CIAA MEN: Shaw will be represented in all six singles finals today in Petersburg, Va.

Alexandre Lord-Andrade, Milso Stankovic, Medhi Ben Cheikh, Kalada Kienka, Olayiwola Enitan and Alexandro Ordonez all advanced with wins.

GOLF

CIAA MEN: St. Augustine's placed third at the 2008 CIAA Golf Championships at The Cardinal Golf Club in Fort Lee, Va.

The Falcons shot a two-day total of 615 to finish behind champion Virginia State (576) and runner-up Fayetteville State (578).

Aaron Oliver led the Falcons, tying for seventh individually with a two-day score of 146.

Jerel Whiting of Virginia State won a three-man playoff to capture the individual crown.

SOFTBALL

CIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: St. Augustine's fell to Fayetteville State 12-2 in the elimination bracket at Petersburg (Va.) Sports Complex.

The Falcons finished their season at 6-21.
