SATURDAY'S RESULTS

MEN'S SOCCER

DUKE 2, REAL MADRID MONARCHS 2: Senior forward Mike Grella, a member of the Hermann Award preseason watch list, scored two of goals as the Blue Devils tied the Real Maryland Monarchs of the United Soccer Leagues in Washington, D.C. The scrimmage was Duke's final tuneup before the season opener Friday at Indiana.

Duke will play Notre Dame next Sunday in its second game in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.

"I think the performance was better than our performance against [UNC-] Greensboro," Duke coach John Kerr said. "Our speed of play was much better, and our closing down spacing was much better on defense. Our final third attacking was more creative, and we had more chances and went up 2-0 and had a good first half."

Grella was fouled in the penalty area in the 15th minute and converted a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. He scored again less than 10 minutes later, when Josh Bienenfeld collected the ball on the right flank and fed him for a shot near the top of the 18-yard box.

Real Maryland came out in the second half with the early momentum and scored twice in the early minutes.

FIELD HOCKEY

DUKE 5, PENN STATE 3: The Blue Devils saw their first action of the season and defeated 2007 NCAA finalist Penn State in a scrimmage in Harrisonburg, Va.

The Blue Devils led 3-1 at halftime before building a 5-1 advantage. The Nittany Lions scored two goals in the last 10 minutes.

Duke opens its season Saturday at Louisville in the Champions Challenge tournament. The Blue Devils will play either Delaware or Michigan State in the second round next Sunday.

FOOTBALL

ST. AUG'S SCRIMMAGES: In preparation for next Saturday night's season opener, St. Augustine's held its final intrasquad scrimmage on "Meet the Falcons Day" at Emery Baseball Field.

Coach Michael Costa said the intensity of the two-hour scrimmage set a positive tone heading into the season opener for the Falcons, who return 18 starters for the 7 p.m. game at Catawba.

"All of the players showed energy, especially the young guys," Costa said. "I saw some hungry guys who really want to play."

MIAMI QB SUSPENDED: Miami quarterback Robert Marve has been suspended for the season opener for an incident stemming back to last year, the Miami Herald reported on its Web site.

Marve was expected to start Thursday against Charleston Southern.

Marve's father, Eugene Marve, confirmed the suspension to the Herald and said that his son was very upset about it.

Miami officials declined to confirm the suspension Saturday.

Marve, a redshirt freshman, was arrested on Oct. 31, 2007, for smashing a car mirror. He was initially charged with two misdemeanors, but they were later lifted.

Fresh off a season-opening victory over Wofford, the N.C. State women's soccer team will try to make it two in a row when the Wolfpack hosts Western Carolina today at 1 p.m. in the N.C. State Soccer Stadium.

The Pack (1-0) opened its new digs with a 1-0 victory over Wofford on Friday night.
