Jourdan Norman added 11 kills for Duke (11-5, 2-2 ACC), and Becci Burling had 10.

North Carolina (8-6, 2-1) was led by Suzanne Haydel with 11 kills and Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland with 10.

Aiwane Iboaya led N.C. State with 13 kills.

VIRGINIA 1, NORTH CAROLINA 0: Virginia's Tony Tchani converted a penalty kick in the 85th minute as the Cavaliers (6-3, 3-0 ACC) defeated No. 12 North Carolina 1-0 to hand the Tar Heels (8-2-1, 1-2) their first home loss of the season.

In a physical match that featured 43 fouls, including 25 by the Cavaliers, Tchani's eighth goal was the only offense UVa would need to claim its first win in Chapel Hill since 2000.

Virginia was awarded the penalty kick when UNC goalkeeper Jacob Wescoe came out to challenge Virginia's Chase Neinken, who made a run down the left side and into the box. The pair collided, and Wescoe was whistled for the foul to set up the winning score.

WOMEN'S GOLF

TAR HEEL INVITATIONAL: Wake Forest and Virginia were tied after the first day of the event at Chapel Hill, shooting 6-over-par scores of 294. Host North Carolina was third at 299.

N.C. State was tied for 15th in the 18-team event with a 312.

Five golfers were tied for the individual lead at 1-under 71, including Virginia's Lene Krog and Jennie Arseneault. Also at 71 were Wake Forest's Nannette Hill and Natalie Sheary and Kent State's Mercedes Germino.

The event continues through Sunday.

DONOVAN SIGNS DEAL: Florida men's basketball coach Billy Donovan signed his six-year contract extension Friday, 16 months after he returned to Gainesville following a brief stint with the NBA's Orlando Magic.

The deal is worth more than $19.5 million before incentives.

Donovan, who is 285-115 in 12 seasons with the Gators, took the head coaching job with the Magic in May 2007 before returning to Florida a few days later after a much-publicized change of heart. He agreed in principle to the extension and earned about $3.1 million last season.

It was unclear what caused the long delay in signing the contract.

Donovan's compensation package will increase annually, from $3.1 million this season to $3.4 million in 2012-13, according to a copy of the contract obtained by The Associated Press.

If Donovan terminates the deal, he would have to pay as much as $500,000 to the school.
