N.C. State golfers 6th after 1st round

N.C. State got off to a good start in the NCAA East Regional Championship at Chattanooga, Tenn., shooting a 5-under-par 279 for sixth place after the first round.

Kent Copeland shot a 4-under 67 to lead State and was tied for seventh, two strokes off the lead.

State's Matt Hill shot a 69 for a share of 21st place, and Darren Blair was tied for 33rd at 70.

Duke got off to a rough start and shot 2-over 286 to end the first round tied for 17th place with Virginia. Junior Clark Klaasen led the Blue Devils with a 1-under 70 and was tied at 33rd, and freshman Wes Roach shot a par 71.

Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals at Purdue's Kampen Course on May 28-31.

WAKE LEADS CENTRAL REGIONAL: Wake Forest shot a 6-over-par 290 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, and Wake sophomore Brendan Gielow's 69 lead individual play.

Wake's Dustin Groves and Webb Simpson tied for 11th at 72.

UNC SEVENTH IN WEST REGIONAL: North Carolina is tied for seventh place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional. The Tar Heels shot a 7-over-par 295 total at Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course, a par-72, 7,111-yard layout, and were six strokes behind first-round leader Oregon.

UNC junior Chase MacFarland shot a par 72 and shared eighth place. Henry Zaytoun III, a freshman from Raleigh, and Reed Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill, each shot a 73 and shared 19th place.
