CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina coach Roy Williams admitted Thursday it was strange not to have No. 50 around.
"I keep looking for him," Williams said. "Where's Waldo? Where's Tyler [Hansbrough]?"
But judging by Friday night's "Late Night with Roy" season-opening festivities, he's got at least one new forward -- No. 31 -- to watch.
John Henson, a skinny, agile, 6-foot-10 freshman from Tampa, Fla., has a significantly different style than the four-time All-America Hansbrough, who is now a rookie with the Indiana Pacers. While Hansbrough's bull-in-a-china-shop mentality was just what the Tar Heels needed to control the lane after most of the 2005 national title team went pro, Henson's lean, long-armed agility may be just what the Tar Heels need on the wing this season in the wake of losing six scholarship players off last year's NCAA championship squad.
Williams has said Henson -- who scored 10 points inside and out during the White team's 36-32 loss to Blue in Carolina's intrasquad scrimmage -- will probably predominantly play at small forward. His versatility has the potential to cause angst for opponents.
"That was one of the guys I really didn't like to guard this summer playing pickup; he's just so tough to defend," fifth-year senior Marcus Ginyard said. "You take away his inside game and push him to the outside, he's very comfortable on the perimeter. You force him inside, he's got that size advantage over you. So he's going to cause some teams some matchup problems ... and he's going to be a huge help to this team."
Other highlights of the evening included the huge applause for Jessica Breland, a senior forward on the women's team who is being treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma; it's still not known whether she will play this season.
After a video commemorating the 100th season of Carolina basketball was played, the men's team donned everything from Elvis wigs to boxers to shiny gold suits to perform musical skits honoring the five years UNC has won an NCAA championship.
But the best chuckle of the night came when the team spoofed Hansbrough's recent AT&T "lost dog" commercial. In the video, freshman twins David and Travis Wear played the part of Hansbrough (who returns the dog), while Henson, in a long-haired wig, played the little girl.
