N.C. Central preparing for accreditation visit

At N.C. Central University in Durham, a search is underway for missing credentials.

Next month, a team from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools comes to town for a big, once-a-decade, three-day accreditation visit. The team will poke its nose all over campus, making sure NCCU has its academic house in order.

But SACS already has some questions, and the university is scrambling to get answers.

NCCU's accreditation reaffirmed

N.C. Central University's accreditation is intact.

The university received reaffirmation of its accreditation this week from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The accrediting body was no doubt familiar with NCCU. A year ago or so, it worked with NCCU to sort through the mess created by an unauthorized satellite campus administered at a suburban Atlanta church run by Eddie Long, a former NCCU trustee.

NCCU business dean replaced

The head of N.C. Central University's business school has been replaced, and the professional school soon will lose its accreditation.

The university replaced Benjamin Newhouse after learning he failed to file any re-accreditation paperwork with the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. As a result, the business school will lose its accreditation after Dec. 31, the university announced this week.

Bijoy Sahoo, an assistant vice chancellor, has been named the interim dean.

NCCU program put grads in limbo

The 25 graduates of N.C. Central University's unauthorized satellite campus in suburban Atlanta would have a hard time getting into at least one North Carolina graduate school.

Since the now-defunct program and its degrees aren't recognized by the commission on colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, those graduates wouldn't even get a look from UNC-Charlotte's graduate admissions officials.

"They would not be able to get their foot in the door," said Johnna Watson, associate dean for enrollment management and information systems at UNCC's graduate school. "For us, the accreditation is just a key component."

NCCU's Georgia campus degrees valid

Bachelor's degrees earned by 25 N.C. Central University students who attended an unauthorized satellite campus at a suburban Georgia megachurch are valid, the head of the university's accrediting agency said Tuesday.

Belle Wheelan, president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission on Colleges, said she was satisfied with the response she received from NCCU and the UNC system about the campus.

NCCU has closed the small collection of undergraduate programs that operated for four years at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga. The pastor there is Eddie Long, an NCCU trustee.
