Free computers head to military kids who can't afford one

Kramden Institute, a nonprofit charitable agency, will give free computers to some 250 military children at Fort Bragg today, part of an effort to bring digital technology to kids who otherwise would not have access to it.

About 200 volunteers from computer maker Lenovo refurbished the computers at a weekend "geek-a-thon." Lenovo and LabCorp donated the computers.

Teachers nominated students to receive the computers, which are meant for children who work hard at school but can't afford home computers.

Computers sought for children

The Kramden Institute Inc. in Durham will hold a Micro Geek-A-Thon & Computer Award Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Volunteers are needed to refurbish computers that the institute, a nonprofit group, will give away 40 computer systems to underprivileged children. The recipients are students, from kindergarten to high school, who are nominated by their teachers, principals or school social workers.

Volunteers needed to refurbish PCs

The Kramden Institute in Durham will hold a Mini Geek-A-Thon and computer award day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. The institute is a not-for-profit charitable institution with the mission of empowering students by giving them home computers that will allow them to advance their achievement.

About 70 volunteers are needed to refurbish 100 computers to give away to hard-working students, kindergarten through 12th grade, in the Triangle. The recipients are nominated by their teachers, principals, or school counselors.

The institute is at 4915 Prospectus Drive, Suite J, in Durham. Volunteer shifts are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch is provided to volunteers.

Learning center coming to complex in Durham

By the end of the month, school-age children at the Oxford Manor public housing complex won't have to go far for help with their homework.

They'll have to walk only a few feet to a new after-school tutoring program scheduled to begin Jan. 29. As many as 60 children will be allowed to enroll in the program, created this year by school and city officials and the YMCA.

The community learning center is the first of several the school system hopes to establish in public housing developments across Durham.
