THREEE TO WATCH
N.C. Central WR Will Scott
The senior moved into 10th place on the school's career receiving yards list after a career-best 179-yard effort in the Eagles' 23-17, double-overtime loss to N.C. A&T last week. A 6-foot-3, 183-pound Charlotte native, Scott has amassed 1,602 receiving yards at NCCU. His 97 career receptions also place him 14th in school history. He needs just three more catches to become the 12th player in school history with 100 career receptions.
Appalachian State QB Armanti Edwards
Edwards appears to have recovered from a summer lawn-mowing accident that prevented him from playing earlier this season. Last week against The Citadel, the junior completed 22 of 29 passes for 327 yards and rushed 10 times for 80 yards. It was the sixth time in his career that Edwards has thrown for more than 300 yards and the fifth time he has surpassed 400 yards of total offense.
Elon WR Terrell Hudgins
Elon's Terrell Hudgins became the all-time NCAA Division I leader in career receptions last week. After tying a career high with 16 catches in a 19-12 win over Furman, the senior from Rocky Mount has 331 career receptions. With six regular-season games remaining, including today's home game against The Citadel, he needs 327 receiving yards to break Jerry Rice's Football Championship Subdivision career receiving yards record.
OBSERVATIONS
St. Augustine's running out of chances
St. Augustine's (1-5, 1-2 CIAA) hosts Johnson C. Smith (3-3, 2-1) at 4 p.m. today at Broughton High School in a must-win game for the Falcons. If they were to lose, the Falcons would not be officially eliminated from championship game contention, although it would be an unlikely climb past Shaw (5-1, 2-1), Fayetteville State (3-3, 2-1) and Johnson C. Smith in the Western Division.
Camels thirst for league win
Campbell is still looking for its first Pioneer Football League victory. The Camels (1-3, 0-2) host Dayton at 1 p.m. today at Baker-Lane Stadium. A week ago, in a 34-13 loss to Marist, the Camels rushed for 214 yards. It will take some more success on the ground and a stalwart defensive effort to overcome the Flyers (3-1, 1-0).
DON'T MISS
N.C. Central at Appalachian State
3:30 p.m., Kidd Brewer Stadium, Boone
This is the first meeting between these two teams. N.C. Central (0-5), in its third season since transitioning to NCAA Division I FCS play, likely is looking in the wrong place today for its first victory of the season. No. 9 Appalachian State (2-2) has won two consecutive Southern Conference games after starting the season 0-2.
Shaw at Fayetteville State
1 p.m., Jeralds Stadium, Fayetteville
In what has been billed by the CIAA as "the game of the week," these teams meet with conference championship implications. Shaw (5-1, 2-1) and Fayetteville State (3-3, 2-1) are tied atop the league's Western Division. The winner puts itself in good position to earn a spot in the CIAA's Nov. 7 championship game. After stumbling to an 0-2 start, the Broncos are aiming to return to their first title game in five years. They will have to slow down a Shaw offense that's averaging a league-best 39.3 points per game.
