Pack needs some stops

N.C. State football coach Tom O'Brien said Monday that he has "complete faith" in the Wolfpack's defensive plan and defensive coordinator Mike Archer.

"He's got the experience," O'Brien said. "He's been through situations like this before. The worst thing you can do is panic and the old, 'Woe is me,' and make wholesale changes. We have a plan. We're confident in our plan. We have to recruit to the plan and get people to do things we want them to do."

On Saturday, N.C. State's defense was shredded by Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, who went 40-for-50 for 459 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-28 Blue Devils victory at Carter-Finley Stadium.

O'Brien will take stock of Pack

Despite a devastating, lopsided loss Saturday, N.C. State football coach Tom O'Brien was reassured while studying Boston College's defense last week.

O'Brien saw the Eagles shut down N.C. State 52-20 on Saturday for the Wolfpack's third consecutive loss. On film, O'Brien watched Boston College's defense turn in solid performances against Wake Forest, Clemson and Florida State.

"Basically, we're playing the same defense," O'Brien said Monday. "It may not look like it. But we're playing the same defense."

Before leaving his former haunt at Boston College's Alumni Stadium, N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien admitted that his team has "regressed" in the last two weeks.

That much was obvious to anyone who watched sophomore Montel Harris churn out school records of 264 rushing yards and five touchdowns in a 52-20 thumping of N.C. State on Saturday.

It didn't matter what coverage N.C. State tried in the secondary during Duke's 49-28 thrashing of the Wolfpack on Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium.

"Whether we were playing man or zone, we weren't even in the same area code sometimes as their guys," N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien said.

Pack tries to patch defense

It shouldn't take long for N.C. State's defensive players to find out whether last week's extra practice was productive.

Fresh off a bye week, the Wolfpack (3-4, 0-3) must travel this weekend to Florida State (3-4, 1-3 ACC), which leads the ACC in total offense at 427.7 yards per game. While trying to regroup from a three-game losing streak, N.C. State watched Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder pass for 395 yards and three touchdowns Thursday night at North Carolina against a Tar Heels defense much more heralded than N.C. State's.

Nonetheless, junior cornerback DeAndre Morgan said State's defense is ready for a challenge.
