ASU's Edwards tops league again

Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards won his second straight offensive player of the year award as the league champion Mountaineers took three of the Southern Conference's major honors.

Besides Edwards, offensive lineman Mario Acitelli won the Jacobs Blocking Awards and coach Jerry Moore shared coach of the year with Chattanooga first-year coach Russ Huesman.

The Southern Conference announced the honors on Tuesday. Awards were voted on by league coaches.

Pirates top C-USA

Conference USA champion East Carolina led the all-conference football team, placing seven players on the first team and earning 12 total selections.

The Pirates' first-team selections included four defensive starters. Defensive linemen Linval Joseph and C.J. Wilson were joined by defensive backs Emanuel Davis and Van Eskridge.

Offensive lineman Sean Allen and punter Matt Dodge earned first-team honors. Junior Dwayne Harris made the first team as a wide receiver and the second team as a kick returner.

Lindsay doubtful vs. UNC

East Carolina might be without leading rusher Dominique Lindsay this weekend when the Pirates visit No. 24 North Carolina.

Coach Skip Holtz said Monday that Lindsay injured his right shoulder in last week's 35-20 loss at West Virginia and isn't very hopeful that Dominique will play.

Holtz lists Lindsay as doubtful and says the senior will have an MRI on the AC joint in his shoulder.

QB hoping to return to Appalachian State

Injured Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards remains hopeful he will be able to play when the Mountaineers open their football season Sept. 5 at East Carolina.

Edwards is recovering from cutting his right foot in a lawn-mowing accident on Aug. 5.

The senior quarterback, expected to become the first two-time winner of the Payton Award as outstanding player in the Football Championship Subdivision, was mowing the grass at his home when his foot slipped while he pulled the mower up a hill.

Miami frustrates Bowden once again

Not much has changed over the years in the Florida State-Miami series. It's usually a tightly contested game and most of the time Miami wins.

It happened again just before midnight Monday when the Hurricanes stopped Florida State on Miami's 2-yard line the last three plays to claim a 38-34 victory in a game coach Bobby Bowden called one of the three greatest he's been involved with in six decades of coaching - all losses.

"It was a typical Florida State-Miami football game," Bowden said Tuesday. "They don't come easy. That's the way we've always played Miami."
