Three to watch

Brandon Chandler

In helping Campbell to its first conference road win in school history, the defensive back was named the Pioneer Football League defensive player of the week. The Kernersville native intercepted two passes in a 17-3 victory over Valparaiso. Campbell hosts Jacksonville at 1 p.m. today.

Scott Riddle

The Elon junior quarterback is closing in on the Southern Conference record for passing yards. The Ramseur native is now the league's all-time leader in career completions (842) and TD passes (76). He is second to Appalachian State's Armanti Edwards for the league lead in passing yards, with 9,446 yards to Edwards' 9,605 yards.

Mark LeGree

The Appalachian State junior defensive back earned Southern Conference defensive player of the week honors for his performance in a 27-10 victory over Elon last week. He hauled in two first-quarter interceptions that led to touchdowns. He leads the conference with six picks.

Observations

Mountaineers assistant honored

Appalachian State defensive ends coach Mark Speir has been named the 2009 NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. A coach for the Mountaineers for seven seasons, he has also served as recruiting coordinator since 2004.

ECSU to play in Pioneer Bowl

Elizabeth City State will face Tuskegee in the 11th annual Pioneer Bowl on Dec. 5 at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium in Columbia, S.C. ECSU will represent the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, while Tuskegee represents the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneer Bowl is the only NCAA sanctioned bowl game involving HBCU athletic conferences.

Don't miss

Savannah State

at N.C. Central

1:30 p.m., O'Kelly Riddick Stadium, Durham

These schools meet on senior day. As the Eagles honor five seniors - fullback Saeed Abdul-Azeez, defensive back Derek Harvey, offensive lineman Gabriel Manns, receiver Will Scott and linebacker Alex Winters - they look to end a tough season with a win. The Eagles own a 3-0-1 lead in the all-time series, after the two teams played to a tie in 1974.

Western Carolina

at Appalachian State

3:30 p.m., Kidd Brewer Stadium, Boone

The Mountaineers (8-2, 7-0 Southern Conference) have secured their fifth consecutive conference title and earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division I FCS postseason tournament. Each team is vying for the annual Battle for the Old Mountain Jug trophy, which is a 25-pound relic.
