Heels choose lacrosse coach

Breschi reported headed to UNC

North Carolina has found its new lacrosse coach, according to a report on the Lacrosse Magazine Web site.

Joe Breschi has resigned at Ohio State to take over at UNC, his alma mater. Breschi sent an e-mail to the Ohio State lacrosse family and friends informing them of his decision, according to the report.

In his e-mail, Breschi wrote, "I've accepted an opportunity to return to my alma mater to be the head lacrosse coach at the University of North Carolina."

Breschi played for North Carolina from 1987-90. He was a two-time All-ACC selection. He led Ohio State to an 11-6 record this season and a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals.

BASEBALL

EX-UNC PITCHER IN SERIOUS CONDITION: As North Carolina prepared to play its second game of the College World Series Tuesday night, its thoughts and prayers are with a former pitcher.

B.J. Dail -- a sophomore from Raleigh who was suspended from UNC's baseball team earlier this season -- was upgraded from critical to serious condition at Massachusetts General Hospital Tuesday night after he was hit and pinned under a truck driven by a teammate on his Brewster Whitecaps Cape League team, according to CapeCodonline.com.

The Brewster (Mass.) police told the Web site that Dail and Ryan G. Woolley, a Georgia pitcher, were watching the CWS on television when Woolley went to move his truck. Dail jumped on the hood, according to Woolley. Woolley then hit the brakes and Dail was thrown under the vehicle.

Woolley is not at the CWS with the Bulldogs because he did not make the postseason cut. He pleaded not guilty in Orleans District Court to operating under the influence of alcohol resulting in serous bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and being a minor in possession of alcohol, according to the story.

Dail, a right-handed pitcher, played 11 innings for UNC last season but was suspended earlier this year for a violation of team rules. A decision has not been made as to whether he will be reinstated next season.

On Tuesday, UNC coach Mike Fox said in a statement: "B.J. Dail and his family are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We wish him the best and pray for a quick recovery."

BASKETBALL

HEWITT LIVENS UP KNIGHT COMMISSION: Georgia Tech basketball coach Paul Hewitt turned a tedious discussion of numbers into something lively.

Amid questions and answers about grade-point averages, graduation rates, surveys and APRs on Tuesday morning during a routine Knight Commission meeting, Hewitt turned on his microphone and chided the reform-minded panel for making "incomplete conclusions" and taking "a fly-over view of the supposed carnage that is college basketball."

"While I like to see everyone who reaches college earn a degree," Hewitt said. "We need to find more effective ways to achieve our goals."

Hewitt spoke during a discussion meant to highlight the progress of the NCAA's new rating system that penalizes teams for failing to meet academic standards. The latest APR -- or Academic Progress Report -- led to 218 teams from 123 schools receiving some sort of penalty when it was released last month. APR scores have been on the rise since the standard was introduced four years ago.

TRACK AND FIELD

CLEMSON COACH RETIRES: Clemson's longtime track coach has retired after a season in which he was accused of depositing money from campus track and field events into a personal account.

Bob Pollock spent 20 years leading the men's track and field program and will leave the Tigers early next month.
