SAN ANTONIO - Some Tar Heels fans were dismayed to see a Jayhawks sticker on Roy Williams' black shirt as he watched Kansas defeat Memphis to win the national championship here on Monday night.

But supporting Kansas wasn't the main reason Williams stayed in town rather than returning home with the UNC team.

"I'm staying here for the game, if you want to say it that way,'' he said Sunday night, "but the bottom line is that my son came from London and couldn't get out till Tuesday, so I wasn't going to leave him in San Antonio by himself."

The Jayhawks defeated UNC in the national semifinals Saturday night. Before returning to UNC, his alma mater, in 2003, Williams coached Kansas for 15 seasons.

In a March 31 news conference, he said he gave "15 years of my heart, body and soul" to Kansas, which he called his "second favorite school. Six years ago it was my favorite school."
