Tim Federowicz went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and then recorded the game-ending strikeout with the tying run on third base to lift No. 2 North Carolina to a 12-11 baseball win over No. 1 Miami and a series victory Saturday at Coral Gables, Fla.
Behind a home run and five RBIs from Tim Fedroff and four hits and two RBIs from Kyle Shelton, the Tar Heels (45-10, 22-7 ACC) built a 12-4 lead through five innings and held off a late rally by the Hurricanes (43-8, 23-5) to win their third straight series against the Canes.
With the series-clinching victory, UNC matched school records for regular-season (45) and ACC (22) victories.
The Tar Heels, who have captured four of their last six regular-season series against the nation's top-ranked team, also won all of their ACC weekend series for the first time since the league went to three-game sets in 1990.
ALSO SATURDAYFLORIDA STATE 8, N.C. STATE 1: The fourth-ranked Seminoles (46-9, 24-6 ACC) jumped to a 7-0 lead afer two innings and rolled past visiting No. 20 N.C. State (37-18, 18-11).
Ryan Pond homered for the Wolfpack, which won once in the three-game series at Tallahassee, Fla., which concluded the regular season.
MOUNT OLIVE SURVIVES: Mount Olive bounced back from a 6-5 loss to USC-Aiken to rout Columbus State 12-2 in an elimination game and advance to the championship round of the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional at Mount Olive.
The top-seeded Trojans (52-6) will face third-seeded USC-Aiken (47-15) today at 1 p.m. If Mount Olive wins that game, the two teams would meet again at 5 p.m. for the regional title.
DUKE 7, VIRGINIA TECH 5: Five Blue Devils had multi-hit games as Duke (37-18-1, 10-18-1 ACC) topped host Virginia Tech (23-32, 6-24) in the regular-season finale for both team.
Duke's 37 victories were the third-most in school history and the Devils reached at least 10 ACC wins for the first time since 2001.
MEMPHIS 7, EAST CAROLINA 5: Trey Wiedman had a pair of hits, including a two-run homer, as host Memphis (17-38, 5-18 C-USA) rallied past ECU (39-17, 13-11) in the regular- season finale for both teams.
ECU took a 5-3 lead in the fifth on back-to-back homers by Stephen Batts and Corey Kemp.
BOSTON COLLEGE 11, WAKE FOREST 7: Tony Sanchez went 3-for-4 with two home runs -- including an eighth-inning grand slam -- to lead host Boston College (26-27, 9-21 ACC) past Wake Forest (24-29, 13-16) in the regular-season finale for both teams.
