Ryan Schimpf homered twice and drove in five runs, and Blake Dean went 5-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs as LSU routed UC Irvine 21-7 to earn a trip to the College World Series Monday night.

Micah Gibbs, Matt Clark, Johnny Dishon and Buzzy Haydel also homered for LSU (48-17-1), which is back in Omaha for the first time since 2004. The Tigers had their 23-game winning streak ended Saturday but rallied for five runs in the ninth Sunday to stay alive in the Super Regional.

LSU will take on North Carolina (51-12) in the opening round of the CWS on Sunday.

Blake Martin started for the Tigers, giving up five hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings, and Jordan Brown (5-0) came on in relief to pick up the win.

The Tigers scored six times in the first inning, including consecutive homers by Dean, Clark and Gibbs off Bryce Stowell (8-3). LSU cruised from there, closing 70-year-old Alex Box Stadium with a victory in front of 8,173 -- the largest crowd in stadium history.

Eric Deragisch and Dillon Bell homered for UC Irvine (42-18), which was trying to get to Omaha for the second consecutive season.

ALSO MONDAY

FRESNO STATE 12, ARIZONA STATE 9: Steve Susdorf's two-run homer capped Fresno State's six-run seventh inning as the Bulldogs stunned Arizona State on Monday night to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 1991.

Fresno State (42-29) became the first No. 4 seed to reach Omaha since the NCAA expanded the tournament field to 64 teams in 1999. The Bulldogs will open against Rice (47-13) on Sunday.

The Sun Devils (49-13), the No. 3 national seed, had been unbeaten in four postseason games before consecutive losses to the Bulldogs.

Matt Newman's second homer of the game gave Arizona State a 5-4 lead in the fifth, but Susdorf tied it in the top of the sixth with an RBI single.

Fresno State loaded the bases with two outs against reliever Mike Leake (11-3) in the seventh. Leake hit Gavin Hedstrom with a pitch to give the Bulldogs a 6-5 lead, and Erik Wetzel followed with a bases-clearing double to make it 9-5. Susdorf then homered over the right-field fence, and Tommy Mendonca added an RBI single in the ninth.

Arizona State scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally fell short. The Sun Devils stranded 15 baserunners after leaving 12 on base in their loss Sunday.

Kris Tomlinson (2-1), the third of five Fresno State pitchers, threw a hitless sixth for the win.

LATE SUNDAY

FRESNO STATE 8, ARIZONA STATE 6: Gavin Hedstrom hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to help Fresno State avoid elimination in the Tempe Super Regional.

Steve Detwiler also homered for the Bulldogs (41-29), who recorded 12 hits off four Arizona State pitchers to force the decisive third game Monday in the best-of-three series.

Greg Bordes was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Sun Devils (49-12), who lost for the first time in five postseason games.

Detwiler gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the second inning when he homered to right.

The Sun Devils answered with three in the third, sparked by Bordes' two-run triple, and added two more in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Danny Grubb had an RBI single, and Hedstrom drove a pitch from reliever Stephen Sauer deep to left for a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
