The school issued a statement Friday saying Flagg was penalized for violating team policies.

No other details were provided.

A 6-foot, 240-pound junior who starred at Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville, Flagg started three games at middle linebacker last year. He also played on special teams and made 23 tackles.

NO. 5 MISSISSIPPI 4, NO. 12 UNC 2: Mississippi won four of five singles matches to eliminate North Carolina in the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Ole Miss (24-4) will play Georgia in Sunday's quarterfinals.

SOFTBALL

CAMPBELL 7, UNC 6: Shayla Cullum delivered a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, capping a two-run rally and eliminating the Tar Heels in the NCAA Regional in Chapel Hill.

Campbell (42-25) was eliminated Friday night when it lost to BYU 1-0 on a no-hitter by Christina Gwyn Trice.

Danielle Spaulding had given UNC (50-12-1) a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer. But after a UNC error, Katie Hinton hit an RBI double to tie the score for Campbell.

FOOTBALL

CUNNINGHAM JOINS WOLFPACK: Akeem Cunningham of East Orange, N.J., has signed a letter of intent at N.C. State. Cunningham (5-foot-11, 185 pounds) played cornerback, safety, quarterback, wide receiver and running back during his senior campaign at state champion East Orange High School.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

UNC LOSES GUARD: Guard Rebecca Gray is transferring from UNC to Kentucky. Gray, from Georgetown, Ky., averaged 5.2 points in 30 games with the Tar Heels as a freshman last season.
