UNC zeroes in on coordinator

Gophers' Withers to lead defense

Minnesota defensive coordinator Everett Withers is expected to be hired in the same position at North Carolina this week, the Minneapolis-based Star-Tribune reported in today's editions.

Withers, who grew up in Charlotte and played football at Appalachian State, spent one season with the Golden Gophers, who ranked 119th (dead last) in NCAA Division I-A last season in total defense (giving up 518.67 yards per game). Minnesota finished the season 1-11.

Before that, he was the defensive backs coach for the NFL's Tennessee Titans from 2001 to 2006.

Reached by the Star-Tribune, Withers declined comment.

Withers would replace Chuck Pagano, who left the Tar Heels after one season to become an assistant coach for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens. Ron Cooper, who coaches the secondary at South Carolina, also interviewed for the position.

A UNC team spokesman said Sunday night the the school has not yet officially made a hire.
