North Carolina's Bill Chamberlain looked Massachusetts' Julius Erving in the eye and never flinched. On that day in 1971, in Madison Square Garden, Chamberlain outshone the player who would become known as "Dr. J," scoring 24 points and holding Erving to 13 on the way to becoming MVP of the NIT.Personal tragedy struck in 1988, when his wife died suddenly. Chamberlain was surrounded by his Carolina "Family" and still gets sermon tapes weekly from former Tar Heel Dave Chadwick, a Presbyterian minister in Charlotte.Recently remarried and father of two sons, Chamberlain lives in Durham and works in Raleigh as a state training officer in the Division of Emergency Management, which prepares first responders to crisis situations. He also is active at St. Joseph's AME church and serves on the Apex Parks and Recreation commission. As for his top athletic highlight, Chamberlain says, "that I was lucky enough to go to Carolina."
