Tanae Davis-Cain scored 17 points Thursday night to help Florida State hold off Wake Forest 57-52 in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Shante Williams added 12 points for the sixth-seeded Seminoles (18-12), who advanced to today's quarterfinals to play No. 12-ranked and third-seeded Duke.
Jacinta Monroe chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds for FSU, which won its tournament opener in consecutive seasons for just the second time.
Corrine Groves had 12 points for the 11th-seeded Demon Deacons (15-15), who took their second straight first-round loss against Florida State. Wake Forest has lost its past four tournament games dating to a quarterfinal loss to Duke in 2005.

Carolyn Swords added 12 points, Ayla Brown had 11 and Brittany Johnson 10 for BC, which won its first tournament game since joining the ACC three seasons ago.
"This means a lot," said Eagles coach Cathy Inglese, whose team was picked to finish 11th in the 12-team league in the preseason media poll. "I knew we had some potential with our freshmen ... but there were still some unanswered questions. But I felt potentially we could have a solid season."
Boston College will play No. 5-ranked Maryland, the No. 2 seed, in a quarterfinal game today.
Andrea Barbour had 13 points for Virginia Tech, which trailed by 18 points in the second half.
GEORGIA TECH 76, MIAMI 49: All season, senior forward Janie Mitchell has been one of Georgia Tech's "go-to" players. Mitchell came through again, scoring 17 points -- including a momentum-changing basket early in the second half -- as the fifth-seeded Yellow Jackets (22-8) routed the 12th-seeded Hurricanes (9-21).
Jacqua Williams and Alex Montgomery had 15 points each, and Iasia Hemingway added 12 for Georgia Tech, which will play No. 4 seed Virginia in a quarterfinal game today.
Despite their poor shooting, the Hurricanes had chances to make a game of it. The biggest came early in the second half, when Miami got baskets from LaToya Cunningham and Epiphany Woodson to cut a 13-point Georgia Tech lead to 39-30 with 18:24 left.
But Mitchell was fouled as she banked in a layup 25 seconds later, with the ensuing three-point play igniting a 21-4 run over the next nine minutes that put the Yellow Jackets solidly in command.
