Three new events highlight 2010 Nationwide calendar

The Nationwide Tour unveiled its 2010 schedule on Monday and three new events were added with two in the United States and one in Colombia.

The Bogota Open is scheduled for March 4-7 with Colombian Camilo Villegas expected to play some sort of role in the championship.

The Mylan Classic is headed to the Pittsburgh area September 2-5, while the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open is going to PGA Tour headquarters at the TPC Sawgrass' Dye Valley course. That event is scheduled for October 21-24.

Ninth-grade center details available

Parents and students can learn Thursday about Wakefield High School's new off-campus ninth-grade center that will open in August.

Starting next summer, Wakefield High freshmen will attend classes at a former Winn-Dixie supermarket that the Wake County school system is leasing and converting to a school. Information will be shared on how students will be bused between the main campus in North Raleigh and the Winn-Dixie in Wake Forest, how lunch service will be provided, and what courses will be offered.

The information session will begin at 7 p.m. at Wakefield Middle School, 2300 Wakefield Pines Drive. It will follow a Wakefield Middle School PTA business meeting that starts at 6:30 p.m.

Senior Players Championship moving to TPC Potomac in 2010

The TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm has been named the host site for the 2010 Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship.

Baltimore Country Club, which has served as host for the Champions Tour's fifth major since 2007, will return as the host site for this championship in 2011.

"We are delighted to announce this one-year move of the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, and we would like to thank the TPC Potomac membership for affording this opportunity to our players, many of whom played there during the Kemper Open and Booz Allen Classic days, and will most certainly enjoy returning to since its incredible renovation," said Mike Stevens, Champions Tour president.

Wakefield ready for Rex Open

On a cool, crisp, clear Wednesday morning, Rex Hospital Open tournament director Bob Scott joked about the near-perfect golf conditions at TPC Wakefield Plantation.

"I ordered up the weather for today," he said at a news conference, adding that he hopes the days are as nice next week for the Rex Hospital Open, the Nationwide Tour event that runs May 24-31.

Golfers arrive at TPC Wakefield Plantation for practice rounds on Monday and start the four-day, 72-hole tournament on Thursday. The Nationwide Tour, which is owned and operated by the PGA Tour, serves as the proving ground for the main tour, with players able to earn their tour cards.

Sim revels in strong Nationwide play

Michael Sim hasn't spent much time investigating why he's playing such spectacular golf.

"I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing," said Sim, a 24-year-old Nationwide Tour golfer who over the past four months has found the swing, distance, touch, consistency and luck some golfers search for their entire careers and never locate.

"It's definitely the best golf I've played in my career," Sim said on Thursday after shooting a 5-under-par 66 on the first day of play at the Rex Hospital Open.
