Hillside High gets new principal
A "high school turnaround consultant" from the state Department of Public Instruction has been named the new principal of Hillside High School in Durham, according to a news release issued this morning.
Hans D. Lassiter has been working with DPI for the past year. Prior to that, he served as principal of Southern Lee High School in Sanford for three years. He also has spent time at Perquimans County High, Southern Vance High School, and Vance-Granville Community College.
The appointment comes over a month after the abrupt resignation of Earl Pappy, Hillside's popular leader for three years. Gas explosion rattles Beijing
At least five people were injured Friday morning in what authorities said was a gas explosion that leveled a restaurant in a central Beijing shopping district.
The blast, coming less than a week before elaborate celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, rattled the capital, which has been under intense security restrictions.
The police said three people were injured, all employees of the restaurant. They were buried in the rubble of the two-story building. Witnesses, however, said several bystanders were hurt.
