Federer reaches Swiss quarterfinals

Roger Federer reached the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors by beating Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday at Basel, Switzerland.

The three-time defending champion was solid on serves to make it six matches against the 51st-ranked Seppi without dropping a set.

"It was a bit tougher [than the first round], but I was able to raise my game at a few crucial moments, and that was the difference," said Federer, who rested through October.

"Overall, these players are talented professionals who are generous both on and off the golf course, not to mention fun to be around," Norman said in a statement.

The issue of players has been something of a problem for Norman, starting with himself. Since the field was announced in October, Norman had to replace three players in the field, including himself. Norman had shoulder surgery and will miss his own charity tournament.

It seems the old-timers were the ones that couldn't make it.

Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly fired a 13-under 59 on Sunday to earn a one-shot win at the $3 million Shark Shootout.

Stricker and Kelly finished with a 26-under 190 after three rounds at Tiburon Golf Club. Stricker's eagle at the 17th hole moved them one stroke ahead of three teams at 25-under, and they held on for the victory when Kenny Perry and J.B. Holmes couldn't make birdie at the 18th.

It marked the first win for Stricker at this event and the second time his teammate captured the title. Kelly teamed with Rod Pampling to win in 2006.

PGA will take a TV hit

The television networks already know what life without Tiger Woods looks like, and they were going to take that knowledge into their upcoming negotiations for the next contract with the PGA Tour.

The tour's six-year deals with CBS and NBC expire in 2012, and negotiations are expected to begin late next year.

Knee surgery sidelined Woods for eight months after his stirring win at the 2008 U.S. Open, slicing television ratings in half while he was gone. Now Woods is taking an indefinite leave from golf after admitting to marital infidelity.
