Catholics forgiving of Pitino

Rick Pitino's personal failings should be forgiven and he should remain the men's basketball coach at Louisville, churchgoers in Kentucky said Sunday.

Some anti-abortion groups have called for the university to fire Pitino because a woman with whom he admitted having extramarital sex had an abortion soon after.

But Catholics attending Mass Sunday morning said the high-profile coach, a self-professed Roman Catholic, should be given another chance.

Deaths hit NCCU hard

Each time Geoffrey Cooper enters the Campus Echo office, he passes a photo of a smiling Denita Smith, the slain N.C. Central University student for whom the college newspaper's newsroom is now named.

It is a sobering reminder that even the young are mortal.

"Every time I walk past that picture, it gets to me," said Cooper, now the Echo's editor in chief.

Biking culture

As cultural shifts go, this one won't move heaven and Earth. But it may lower the blood pressure and cholesterol readings of a few Duke students.

The university unveiled its new Duke Bikes initiative Thursday, a free bicycle-loan program aimed at increasing bike ridership on campus.

Chris Oishi, a graduate student and member of the campus group Duke Bike Advocates, thinks the program, which lets students and faculty members borrow bikes for five days at a time, can gradually change the way students travel.

Beach reach is vast

Garner is known for its friendly small-town atmosphere and -- according to thousands of partygoers -- its beach music.

That's what drew people to a Garner farm, of all places, on Saturday to dance the shag at the 8th Annual Triangle Beach Music Festival. The sunny sky and comfortable temperature were almost enough to make them think they were down by the coast -- minus the sand and water.

"It's a beautiful day," said Mark Nelson of Cary. "You look up at the sky and forget about the trees."
