Southern rolled up for 560 yards of total offense to overpower Big-8 Conference opponent Cedar Ridge 49-14 in Friday night football.
The win is the Spartans (6-4, 4-1) fourth straight after losing three straight games early in the season.
Senior quarterback Jalen Greene threw for 286 yards and a touchdown, while teammate running back Joey Strong Jr. ran for another three TDs on 109 yards rushing.
Spartans wide receivers Taron Beauford and Santonio Marshall Jr. combined for 224 yards receiving.
Strong got Southern on the scoreboard first with a 3-yard run on the Spartans first possession of the game.
But the lead was short-lived after Cedar Ridge (5-5, 2-3) wide receiver Lucas “Seth” Baldwin returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to tie the game with just 3 minutes gone in the first quarter.
But Southern retook the lead for good on a Jalen Green to Strong 67-yard connection with just under seven minutes left. Green threw his second touchdown, this one an 85-yarder to Taron Beauford to put Southern up 21-7.
The Red Wolves missed a golden opportunity just before the half ended with a first and goal with 1.5 seconds left. But RB Montae Kee was stopped as time ran out.
