Richard McCollum kicked three field goals, including a 46-yarder, to lead Southern Lee past Lee County 16-13 in the 11th annual Brick City Bowl on Friday.
It was the first loss of the season for the Yellow Jackets (9-1, 4-1 Cape Fear Valley 3A), who led 13-10 midway through the third period, but turned the ball over five times in the game.
The Cavaliers (7-2, 4-1) captured their third consecutive Brick City win over their cross-town rivals, and also moved into a three-way tie for first place in the conference with Lee and Fayetteville’s Westover High.
Both teams will play their final conference game next week before the playoffs begin Nov. 18.

THEY SAID IT
“We’re just excited and happy,” said Southern Lee senior Ishois Times, who scored the lone Cavalier touchdown. “It meant so much to do this on our Senior Night, and now we are just focusing on Terry Sanford and the playoffs.”
Cavalier quarterback Noah Terhune fired a strike to Wendell Hill, who raced 83 yards for an apparent, and later nullififed, go-ahead touchdown with the score knotted at 13-13. The play still put the Cavs deep in Yellow Jacket territory, where McCollum nailed a 37-yard field goal which proved to be the game winner.
