After making the boys soccer playoffs for the first time since 2011, Cary is heading to the second round. The Imps stunned Heritage with a golden goal in overtime to prevail 3-2 in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A boys soccer playoffs.
Heritage’s James Simpson scored in the 2nd minute. The Huskies suffered a big play later in the half when leading scorer Dylan Berk was given a red card in the 28th minute for a tackle from behind. Heritage’s Joe Adgate saved the penalty kick but the Huskies were a man down the rest of the way.
Heritage led 1-0 at halftime, but Cary stormed back in the second.
Quinn Dunphy tied the game in the 56th and Danny Alvarez put the Imps up 2-1 in the 73rd.
Never miss a local story.
Heritage’s Santiago Romero extended the game with a 77th minute goal.
Adgate made seven saves in the overtime periods, but in the 103rd (after two, 10-minute scoreless halves of overtime and minutes into the first sudden-death period) Alvarez slotted in a breakaway game-winner.
