Julius Barnes scored 30 points as Garner, the top seed in the 4A East, raced past Fayetteville South View 92-70 Monday night in the second round of the NCHSAA boys’ high school basketball playoffs. Barnes had plenty of support as Thomas Allen scored 19 and Jayshaun Smith 14.
South View closed within six with five minutes left, but Allen hit back-to-back buckets and the lead was never threatened again. Garner made 14 of 16 free throws during the final 2 minutes, 30 seconds.
“Once we got the ball into the right man’s hands against their press we were all right,” said Garner coach Eddie Gray. “South View has some great athletes and forced us to make some mistakes.”
The Trojans will be at home Tuesday night in the third round against Northern Durham, which eliminated Broughton 58-51.

Wilmington Hoggard 92, Cary 83 (2OT): Hoggard’s Trae Bryant scored 46 points in lifting the Vikings over Cary.
The Imps’ Donte Tatum had 31 points and Cory Ensler added 26 points and 12 rebounds.
Bryant hit a shot with five seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 64, and Cary’s half-court shot at the buzzer hit the rim.
The first overtime ended 77-77. Cary was playing for the final shot when it was called for a palming violation. Hoggard’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was blocked.
Wilmington Hoggard will play Wednesday at Fayetteville Seventy-First.
East Chapel Hill 57, Fayetteville Jack Britt 46: East Chapel Hill, a No. 21 seed, knocked off Fayetteville Jack Britt 57-46, and South Central Pitt, No. 4, eliminated Fayetteville Smith 62-52. The winners will play in the third round at South Central Pitt.
Knightdale 83, Apex 69: Knightdale defeated 2014 state champion Apex, and Millbrook, the No. 2 seed, topped East Wake 76-52. Knightdale next will play at Millbrook.
Fayetteville Westover 49, Cardinal Gibbons 42: Fayetteville Westover, seeded No. 12, knocked off fifth-seeded Cardinal Gibbons. Eastern Alamance ended Erwin Triton’s season 63-54. Fayetteville Westover will travel to Eastern Alamance for the next round.
Cleveland 69, Eastern Guilford 63: Cleveland, the No. 2 seed, held off Eastern Guilford, and Havelock topped Orange 70-59. Cleveland’s Bobby Stenborg scored 21 points. Havelock next will play at Cleveland.
Durham Voyager 68, Manteo 31: Voyager, a No. 2 seed, cruised into the third round as Jay Huff scored 25 points. Whiteville defeated Wallace-Rose Hill 85-45. Whiteville will play at Durham Voyager in the third round.
Greenville Conley 59, Leesville Road 51: Conley, the No. 9 seed, beat Wakefield in the first round and stopped Leesville Road on Monday. Broughton, the No. 16 seed, eliminated top-seeded Millbrook 44-38. Broughton will visit Greenville Conley for a third-round matchup.
Wilmington Hoggard 52, Southeast Guilford 49: Hoggard defeated Southeast Guilford and Britt upset Hope Mills South View 52-49. Fayetteville Britt will play at Wilmington Hoggard in the third round.
Athens Drive 77, New Hanover 71: Grace Hunter scored seven of her 43 points in the final four minutes as Athens Drive defeated New Hanover. New Hanover cut the lead to 63-61 midway in the fourth quarter, but Hunter helped the Jaguars keep the lead. Athens Drive’s Brinae Thornton finished with 21 points. Athens Drive will play its third round at Durham Riverside, which eliminated Knightdale.
Durham Riverside grabbed an 18-point lead on Knightdale and dashed to a victory. The Pirates were balanced, led by Ariel Wilson’s 16 points and seven rebounds. Yakima Clifton had 15 points and eight rebounds. Mone’ Jones and Zaria Rogers added 14 and 10 points.
Durham Hillside 57, Greensboro Dudley 51 (OT): Hillside, seeded No. 10, went into overtime before slipping past Greensboro Dudley. Southeast Raleigh, the No. 2 seed, nipped East Wake 60-57. Durham Hillside will play at Southeast Raleigh in the third round.
Pittsboro Northwood 62, Cameron Union Pines 59: Northwood, No. 9 seed, went on the road to oust No. 8 Union Pines. Eastern Wayne, the top seed, handled Pikeville Aycock 74-56. Pittsboro Northwood next will play at Eastern Wayne.
Corinth Holders 49, West Carteret 37: Corinth Holders came from behind to top West Carteret and Chapel Hill beat Wilson Hunt 56-40. Chapel Hill will host Corinth Holders in the third round.
Fayetteville Terry Sanford 45, Cardinal Gibbons 36: Fayetteville Sanford, the No. 3 seed, ousted Cardinal Gibbons. Eastern Alamance, a No. 22 seed, beat Havelock 43-27 to set up a third-round game at Fayetteville Sanford.
Bunn 68, Currituck County 32: Bunn, a No. 3 seed, romped past Currituck County. The Wildcats will be at home against Northside, an 81-32 winner against Warren County.
Roxboro Community 43, Tarboro 33: Roxboro Community, the No. 2 seed, pulled away from Tarboro. Frankin Academy, a 10 seed, stopped Rocky Point Trask, seeded No. 7, 53-32. Franklin Academy next will play at Roxboro Community.
