Northern Vance is ineligible for the N.C. High School Athletic Association football playoffs after ejections stemming from a fight during last Friday’s 7-5 loss to Warren County.
The NCHSAA does not release how many players have been ejected, but did confirm Northern Vance is ineligible. Northern Vance did not return a call for comment.
The state rule is that once three individuals (players or coaches) on any team are ejected for fighting in a given season, that team cannot make the playoffs. The same applies to teams with six individual ejections.
A player who leaves the bench during a fight – even with no contact – is considered part of the fight and counts toward the three-ejection threshold.
Never miss a local story.
Warren County coach Terrance McCormick said that his team had just one player ejected in the fight.
Northern Vance entered this season with a solid group hoping to make the postseason for the first time since 2008. Last year’s Vikings were 5-6 and just missed the cutoff.
The Vikings held Warren County to minus-69 yards rushing but neither team had an offensive touchdown. Warren’s fumble return for touchdown was the game-winner as Northern Vance could only muster a safety and a field goal.
