Southern Nash only threw the ball one time Thursday night, but didn’t need much of a passing game the way its rushing corps conducted business in a 31-16 nonconference football win over Bunn.
The fast-tempo Firebirds (3-0) produced 418 yards on the ground, mostly thanks to junior Kendrick Bell and sophomore Zonovan Knight, with 11 total players getting carries.
Bunn (2-1) was plagued with poor field position early on, punting into quality returns by Southern’s Nadir Thompson that resulted in short scoring drives for the Firebirds.
A 4-yard rush by Jerod Wright and 2-point conversion by Thompson, followed by a Knight 4-yard run with a failed conversion put Southern Nash up 14-0 early in the second quarter.
The Wildcats pulled within a possession by halftime. Fullback Omar Rosa scored from 3 yards out and after a 38-yard field goal by Firebird kicker Justin Vasquez, Bunn’s Tomas O’Campo booted a 32-yarder to make it 17-10, Southern Nash.
Dae’One Wilkins broke through the Wildcats’ back line on the right side and crossed back for a 34-yard run that gave the Firebirds a 24-10 cushion midway through the third period.
Then, with 11 minutes, 10 seconds left in the game, Southern took a 21-point lead on a 30-yard dash by Knight.
