James “Jake” DeShields
Athletics: Varsity football and baseball
Favorite subject in school: Math
I was fascinated when: I learned how to do all the math problems that when I was younger looked like a different language.
Most inspiring teacher: Knightdale football coach Cedric Dargan because he is a great weightlifting teacher but also finds the time to be a great coach.
Most inspiring book: There hasn’t really been a book that has inspired me but, “The Giver” (Lois Lowery), helped me understand how important feelings and emotions are in everyday life.
It is hard to believe: We used to spend less than 2 dollars for a gallon of gas.
Who epitomizes a good American: I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head that epitomizes what a good American should be. A good American is a hard-working, self-sustaining person who when he/she can gives back to the community.
Inspirational person: Martin Luther King Jr. He sacrificed his life to insure the next generation would not have to live with segregation.
Ideal guest list: Nelson Mandela, Babe Ruth and Abraham Lincoln.
P eople would be surprised to know: I enjoy sitting down and reading a magazine. Usually I’m always outside and active.
I wish I could have been: Watching TV when Neil Armstrong first stepped foot on the moon. I think that would have been cool to see.
