Player of the week: Defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence of Wake Forest was the most dominating player on the field in Friday’s 27-13 victory over Garner. He helped Wake Forest shut off the inside running game, closed from inside to outside on the Garner’s attempts to run outside and kept continual pressure on quarterback Brodie West. He had 10 tackles and a pair of sacks.
Bryce Love, Wake Forest: Exemplified the heart and toughness of the Wake Forest team in the semifinal win against Garner. Love missed three quarters of a 28-21 quarterfinal win against Millbrook with a dislocated shoulder but started against the Trojans. He scored on a 90-yard run on Wake Forest’s first possession and added a 52-yard scoring jaunt during the closing minutes that clinched the win. He finished with 228 yards on 16 carries.
Brooks Cunningham, Wake Forest: Caught two touchdown passes from Matt Moore in the win. He leaped over defenders consistently and finished with four catches for 72 yards.
Never miss a local story.
Andreis Harris, Garner: Blocked a Wake Forest punt that was returned by Dalson Counts for a touchdown.
Nyheim Hines, Garner: Rushed for 76 yards and caught six passes for 62 yards in the loss.
Connor Stough, Chapel Hill: Completed 24 of 40 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown in a 34-15 loss to Northern Guilford in the 3AA semifinals.
