Orange is the fifth area high school football team to be No.1 in The News & Observer high school football poll this season.

Coach Pat Moser’s Big Eight 3A club has not been seriously challenged this season and has outscored its opponents 311-43. The Panthers shut out PAC-Six 4A co-leader Durham Riverside 38-0.

Garner (5-2), Leesville Road (5-2) and Durham Hillside (4-2) were ranked No.1 before Wake Forest (6-1) claimed the top spot. Wake Forest slipped to No.3 this week after losing to Wakefield (7-0) in last week’s Cap Eight 4A showcase, 32-26. Wakefield is No.2 this week.

Leesville returned to the rankings after beating Sanderson 28-17 Friday.

South Granville (6-1) jumped into the rankings at No.11 after beating Franklinton 67-57. South Granville has won six straight since dropping its opener to Rocky Mount, 27-14.
