Orange defeated Chapel Hill last week to remain undefeated, but the victory was too close for the Panthers to remain atop The News & Observer high school football rankings.

Orange (8-0) scored on the last play to beat Chapel Hill (3-5) and avoid what would have been a major upset.

South Granville and Corinth Holders, who were Nos. 11 and 14, didn’t dodge losses. South Granville lost 22-14 to Southern Vance, which was 1-6, and Corinth Holders lost 31-28 to South Johnston, which also was 1-6.

Wake Forest returns to the top spot after being third last week, and Knightdale also leaps over Orange, which falls to No. 3.

Garner, Cardinal Gibbons and Lee County, all 6-2, return to the rankings.
