Millbrook, No. 3 in The News & Observer rankings last week, dropped a 7-3 decision to Leesville Road, another top-10 team, and tumbled all the way to No. 10 in the rankings.
It has been that kind of year.
The N&O Top 15 has been volatile this season, but at least Knightdale, which last week became the seventh team to be ranked No. 1 this season, held on to the top spot. The Knights were open last week.
One measure of the closeness of the top teams can be found in the power ranking done by Brian Simmons. He tracks each team in the state and uses a formula he developed to compute a power ranking.
Last week, his ranking for the area’s top 10 teams was: 1. Wake Forest (138.0 points), 2. Middle Creek (134.9); 3. Panther Creek (134.6); 4. Knightdale (133.5); 5. Orange (133.1); 6. Hillside (131.2); 7. Millbrook (131.1); 8. Wakefield (129.9); 9. Leesville Road (129.1); 10. Garner (128.2).
Wake Forest’s power ranking will tumble after last week’s 14-10 loss to Sanderson. It is probable that his ranking will have the top nine teams in the area within a field goal of each other.
