Durham Riverside was a surprise third round winner in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A girls’ basketball playoffs and leaps into The News & Observer high school basketball rankings this week.

The Pirates entered the playoffs as a No. 19 seed, but knocked off Greenville Conley, Cary and Fayetteville E.E. Smith en route to Thursday’s state quarterfinal game against Southeast Raleigh.

The Millbrook ascends to the No. 1 spot in the boys’ ranking following Northern Durham’s third round loss to Apex.
