Millbrook and Apex have a solid lead over the rest of the field in the N&O Cup competition.
Millbrook is the only school to be ranked by The News & Observer in all six top 15 rankings in the fall and winter sports. The Wildcats were second in boys basketball, fourth in girls basketball, fifth in football and eighth in volleyball. They also were 12th in wrestling and 14th in boys soccer.
The champion in a sport receives 15 points in the N&O Cup competition. The second team gets 14 points and the third place team gets 13. The process continues to the 15th-place team. Only three team sports per season are factored into the N&O Cup.
Apex was among the top 10 in boys soccer, volleyball and girls basketball and were on top of The N&O rankings in boys basketball after winning the N.C. High School Athletic Association state 4A title.
Garner, Chapel Hill and Durham Riverside are tied for third with 33 points, and Orange and Cardinal Gibbons are right behind with 32 and 31 points, respectively.
The N&O has spring rankings in baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse but only the rankings with top 15s – baseball, softball and girls soccer – will count toward the N&O Cup.
Forty-eight schools in the greater Triangle area have ended the season in one of the six rankings.
Green Hope won the inaugural N&O Cup in 2013 and has 14 points thus far, all from boys soccer.
