GARNER -- Garner showed the grit and determination of past years Friday night as it knocked off previously undefeated and No. 1-ranked Southeast Raleigh 49-42 in a game that was not decided until the final seconds.
Garner (5-4, 3-2 Greater Neuse River) trailed 28-14 late in the first half but gradually built a 49-35 lead.
The Trojans cemented the victory when sophomore linebacker Gavin Wilson intercepted a Gabe Henderson pass at the Garner 35 with 16 seconds to play.
"This is one of the biggest wins that I can remember here," Garner coach Nelson Smith said. "The offensive line no doubt played their best game, and defensively we stopped them when we needed to in the second half."
After leading 28-21 at the half, Southeast ran just eight plays in the first 18 minutes of the second half as Garner's patented pitch running attack gradually took over.
The Trojans pulled even at 35 on a 3-yard touchdown run by Juwan Moye with 2:19 left in the third quarter.
Garner then recovered the kickoff when the ball deflected off a Southeast Raleigh up man and bounced right back to Trojans kicker Connor Torruella.
Cody Woodall capped the ensuring drive with a 15-yard TD pass to Moye that put Garner in front for good. Woodall completed 21 of 28 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns in the game.
Moye, who spent the night in the hospital Monday for dehydration, scored his third touchdown of the half on a 37-yard run with 7:43 to play with a 49-35 Garner lead.
Southeast (8-1, 4-1) cut the lead to 49-42 on an 11-yard Henderson touchdown run with 4:00 to go.
Henderson ran for 77 yards in the game and threw for 321. He ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more.
Quentin Todd pulled in two of the Bulldogs' scoring passes and finished with 118 yards in receptions.
