Wake Forest-Rolesville rallied to win three straight sets to defeat Green Hope in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A volleyball playoffs.
WF-R dropped the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21 but won the next three 25-22, 25-18 and 15-9.
"The first set we were flat and were playing atypically," Cougars coach Jenna Hinton said. "The second set was competitive, and in the third set we made some adjustments and were very consistent."
Karson Ratliff, a 6-foot-1 junior, had 18 kills, while Elizabeth James was successful on six of eight kill attempts.
The Cap Seven had four teams advance to the third round. Broughton, the league's No. 3 seed, upset Person 18-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-23.
Undefeated Wakefield beat Durham Jordan and No. 2 seed Enloe eliminated Apex.
Gibbons volleyball: Cardinal Gibbons (21-1) defeated Mayodan McMichael 25-11, 25-14, 25-9 to advance to the third round of the NCHSAA 3-A volleyball tournament.
Christina Dorismond had 15 kills and three blocks. Avery Striebel had 14 kills and 10 digs. Victoria Phillips had 28 assists.
Gibbons is No. 16 in the ESPN/Rise national rankings.
NCISAA soccer: St. David's rolled into the semifinals of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A boys soccer tournament Tuesday with a 5-0 victory over High Point Westchester.
St. David's (19-1-1) will play Caldwell Academy at 4 p.m. on Friday in the semifinals at High Point Westchester Country Day. Caldwell defeated Cary Christian, the No. 5 seed, 3-2.
North Raleigh Christian was eliminated 4-3 in sudden-death overtime by Cannon School in the 3-A second round.
NCISAA volleyball: Ravenscroft (13-8) moved to the quarterfinals of the NCISAA 3-A volleyball tournament with a 25-21, 25-8, 25-17 victory over Charlotte Providence Day.
The Ravens will play second-seeded Charlotte Latin (24-1) on Friday at 9 a.m. Latin is a five-time defending state champion.
In the NCISAA 1-A tournament, Raleigh Word of God was eliminated by Cape Fear Christian 25-10, 19-25, 25-14, 27-25.
In 2-A, Cary Christian advanced with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-8 win over Kerr-Vance Academy and St. David's beat Harrells Christian in straight sets. St. David's will play top-seeded High Point Christian in the second round. Cary Christian faces Asheville Christian.
NCISAA tennis: Ravenscroft (21-1 and the No. 2 seed) defeated Greensboro Day in the NCISAA 3-A dual-team tennis tournament.
North Raleigh Christian and Forsyth Country Day are scheduled to play a second-round match today. The winner will play Saint Mary's, which is the No. 3 seed.
NCHSAA tennis: Durham Science and Math remained undefeated with a 6-0 victory over Pender as the Unicorns advanced to the third round of the 1-A playoffs.
Most area NCHSAA second-round dual-team tennis matches were rained out on Tuesday.
Broughton (16-0) is home against Durham Riverside (13-3) today while Green Hope (19-2) goes to East Chapel Hill (21-2).
Green Hope wins Tri-Nine: Green Hope clinched the Tri-Nine boys soccer championship Monday with a 2-1 victory over Holly Springs.
Coach Andrew Chadwick said the NCHSAA tournament will be difficult. He expects Durham Jordan, Broughton, Fuquay-Varina, Sanderson, Leesville Road, Millbrook, Apex and Green Hope to be in the same half of the bracket.
Football game moved: Broughton's home football game this week against Wakefield has been moved to Thursday night. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
