Noteworthy: Broughton is the two-time defending state champion in the boys 4-A. Blake Williams of Northern Durham, Mohamed Abushouk of Cary, Reidy Jones of Broughton and Bryan Spreitzer of Green Hope have some of the fastest times among 4-A runners. East Chapel Hill's Carolyn Baskir has the fastest 4-A girls times in the state.

Noteworthy: The 3-A final is a rematch of last year's 2-A championship, which West Henderson won. Cardinal Gibbons handed West Henderson its only loss this season. West Henderson is coached by Jan Stanley, an NCHSAA Hall of Fame coach with 698 wins. Coach Jim Freeman has led Cardinal Gibbons to nine state titles ... Cedar Ridge is led by outside hitter LeeAnne Maultsby... Rose is the defending state 4-A champion.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. in 10 different categories. An NCHSAA-record 116 teams are entered.
There are various champions in the categories, but the Carolina Cup will be awarded to the team with the highest cumulative score among varsity teams.
Boys soccer
Broughton, ranked second among 4-A boys soccer teams in the state, played East Chapel Hillon Friday night. The game had not ended at press time for this edition of The News & Observer.
Most second-round matches are scheduled for today.
Durham Jordan (20-0), which is ranked No. 3 in the nation, is at home against No. 14 Fuquay-Varina (17-4-1) today at 5 p.m. Green Hope (15-2-4), No. 9 in the state, is at home against Sanderson at 6 p.m. and Durham Riverside (13-3-1), No. 10, is at home against No. 13 Apex (16-5).
