DURHAM -- Southern Durham's quick-strike offense was on full display on Saturday night and East Wake was left watching the show.
Quarterback Alan Lea threw for 173 yards and three touchdowns, leading the top-seeded Spartans to a convincing 34-20 victory over the Warriors in the first round of the 4-A playoffs.
Southern Durham (11-1) advanced to take on Athens Drive, a 35-17 winner over Roxboro Person, in the second round.
The fleet-footed Spartans were able to thrive on a muddy field that was unplayable on Friday night, causing the teams to postpone the game a day.
"I was happy with the win," Southern coach Adrian Jones said. "Especially under these [field] conditions."
Southern Durham started quickly. Khamari Everett returned the opening kickoff 69 yards to the East Wake 11-yard line. Desmond Lawrence scored on the next play, rushing around the left side, for a 7-0 lead.
The Spartans increased the lead to 21-0 on a 47-yard pitch and catch from Lea to Tony Creecy and a 46-yard Everett interception return for a score.
After East Waske scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Chris Pernell to Tyler Horton to start the second quarter, Southern Durham countered less than a minute later. Lea found a streaking Kwidarius Sapp for a 35-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 28-7.
Fullback Alonzo Hedgepeth caught Lea's third touchdown pass from 11 yards out on a third-and-goal to give the Spartans a 34-7 cushion.
"Alan stepped up and made some smart plays tonight," Jones said of his senior quarterback. "A lot of people worry about our speed and key on trying to stop the run, but we can get behind you with our speed and it's a blessing we have speed and really smart receivers."
East Wake, which ended its season 4-8, put up a fight in the fourth quarter, scoring two late touchdowns on a Jamal Davis 1-yard run and a 6-yard score from Kasuna Williams.
Tailback Mike Engles led the Warriors with 80 yards rushing on 19 carries, while Williams added 52 yards on 11 carries.
