Crusaders win the day

Cardinal Gibbons quarterback Doug Burton ran for a pair of touchdowns in the final five minutes of the game, leading to a 20-7 victory over Cedar Ridge.

Both of Burton's touchdown runs were for 16 yards, but Gibbons' leading rusher was Austin Donald, who ran for 97 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown.

Burton completed 6 of 13 passes for 112 yards and also ran for a pair of two-point conversions.

Friday night heroes

Gabe Henderson, Southeast Raleigh: The Kent State quarterback recruit was spectacular in the Bulldogs' 41-7 victory over Holly Springs. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 103 yards and another score. Teammate Malcolm Nunley returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and intercepted two passes.

Dalan Snow, Harnett Central: The sophomore defensive back had two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, as the Trojans defeated Apex 42-7. Central held Apex to 1 yard rushing. The Trojans' Jarrod Spears ran for 195 yards.

Keith Marshall and Trey McFarland, Millbrook: The Wildcats' run-and-throw offense was clicking as sophomore Marshall rushed for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Marshall also had 153 yards receiving and two TD catches. McFarland passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns.

McNeese State stuns Appalachian

Josh Lewis connected on an 18-yard field goal Saturday with 4 seconds left as McNeese State upset host Appalachian State 40-35.

The kick capped a 79-yard drive following a game-tying score by Appalachian State (0-2), which has lost back-to-back games in a season for the first time since falling to Hawaii and Eastern Kentucky to open the 2003 campaign.

After receiving the ensuing kickoff, the Mountaineers made several laterals before Travaris Cadet was tackled in the end zone by Kentrel Butler for a safety to seal the win for McNeese State (2-0).

Friday night heroes

Shannon Peppers, Pittsboro Northwood: Rushed for 414 yards and seven touchdowns in a 62-34 win over Carrboro. Peppers scored on runs of 55, 4, 63, 74, 51, 40 and 1 yards.

Thomas Moore, East Chapel Hill: Booted a 50-yard field goal with 15 seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a 24-21 victory over Northern Durham.

Recap: U-A-B vs. Fla Atlantic

Joe Webb threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more as the UAB Blazers bested the Florida Atlantic Owls, 56-29, in a non-conference game at Legion Field.

Webb was 14-of-19 through their air for 292 yards and ran for 120 additional yards as the Blazers (4-5) won their second straight.

Webb completed passes to eight different receivers. Frantrell Forrest caught three balls for 69 yards and two scores.
