RALEIGH - Broughton junior Brandon Haynes can't remember a week like the one he's had, but after Saturday's performance, he ensured this was a week he won't ever forget.

Five days after his overtime winner in the East Regional final, Haynes scored twice in extra time Saturday to give the Capitals a 3-2 win against Greensboro Grimsley in the NCHSAA 4-A state championship game at the WRAL Soccer Center.

"Scoring all these goals, It's all because of my teammates," said Haynes, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player and finished the season with 24 goals. "It's just been awesome."

The game's first 70 minutes yielded only one goal, while four were scored during the final 30, including three in the two 10-minute overtimes.

Broughton (28-0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. On a free kick, Watt Williams played a ball into the box, and Kevin Stam outjumped his man and headed the ball into the net.

The Whirlies (20-4-1) controlled play for much of the second half, but the Broughton defense limited their looks at the goal. Finally, in the 74th minute, Thomas Driver played Josh Katz into the corner, and Katz sent a low cross to the near post, where Michael Gehrke headed it past Broughton goalie Scott Goodwin.

"Why not? That's what happened last year in the state finals," said Williams, who had two assists. "We fought through that. We knew what it's like. I think we were better prepared for the overtime. It hit us hard, but we came back out. Just playing in overtime situations, that's when we step it up. Brandon came up big."

Haynes got his first goal in the 88th minute, when Ryan Attayek played a long ball into the box. Haynes just beat Grimsley goalkeeper Daly Brower to the ball and headed it into the goal.

Haynes struck again in the 92nd minute, when Williams played a perfect ball into space. Haynes received it at the top of the box, touched it by a defender and tucked it in at the near post.

"He's a natural striker," Broughton coach Izzy Hernandez said. "He's got a nice ability to finish some shots off for us. And that's what he does well."

Down 3-1 with eight minutes to play, Grimsley fought back.

Gehrke scored his second goal in the 96th minute. Goodwin saved Gerhke's initial shot but tipped it off the crossbar, and Gerhke pounced on the rebound.

Two minutes later, the Whirlies nearly tied it again. After a scrum in front of the goal, the ball deflected off the crossbar and went straight down. While Grimsley players appealed for a goal, Attayek cleared the ball off the line and play continued.

"That's a tough one to take," said Grimsley coach Matt Martineau. "When you go down two goals in overtime and you can work and earn one back and you almost have the second one. ... "

The Capitals became the first 4-A team since Sanderson in 1988-89 to win back-to-back state championships.
