RALEIGH -- Middle Creek earned its first victory of the season 24-8 over previously unbeaten Sanderson on Friday night.

Despite the rainy conditions, sophomore Mustangs quarterback Garrett Leatham passed for 182 yards. He completed 10 of 14 passes in the first half before the hardest downpours arrived.

Stephen Sladek rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns for Middle Creek (1-2).

"It's real nice to get a win," said Middle Creek coach Sean Crocker, whose team avenged last season's loss to the Spartans. "The defense kept us in it until the offense got it going at the end of the second [quarter]."

Leatham led the Mustangs on scoring drives of 77 and 65 yards just before intermission, giving Middle Creek a 15-2 lead at halftime. Wide receiver Tre Nesbit accounted for 91 of those yards and a touchdown.

Mustangs kicker Matt Frongello booted a 43-yard field goal in the third quarter.

The Spartans (2-1) scored all of their points off special teams, including a safety and a 59-yard punt return by Matt James.
