WAKE FOREST -- Wake Forest-Rolesville senior Denzel Reina didn't want to repeat what coach Earl Smith told the team during a charged halftime speech.
Reina responded with two interceptions, the go-ahead touchdown and the spark the second-seeded Cougars needed en route to a win over 15th-seeded Cary in the first round of the NCHSAA 4-AA football playoffs.
"I was wanting to come back hard from my goof-ups in the first half," said Reina, who had 65 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the night. "I had to step up."
The Cougars (12-0) also got big performances from running backs Trea Jones and Brexton Young. The pair combined for 253 yards and three touchdowns.
After the two teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, the Imps (5-7) took a 14-7 lead with less than a minute to play in the first half on a 34-yard halfback pass from Andrew Smith to Cameron Castor.
