Several sharp-eyed readers helped establish that the photo that ran in Tuesday's High School Huddle was indeed either the 1913 or 1914 Raleigh High football team.

The picture was taken at Riddick Field, which was where students at N.C. College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (now N.C. State) drilled and played sports.

The building in the background is Tompkins Hall. The building that was mistaken for the Bell Tower actually was an ivy-covered tower attached to Tompkins.

Tompkins, a building in which textiles courses were taught, burned in 1914 and most of the tower was destroyed, but the bottom part of the tower is still visible from Hillsborough Street.

Park Shops, pictured on the back left of the photo, was completed in 1914. Seating on the west side of Riddick was added in 1916 and is not in the photograph.

Several of the players in a photo of the 1914 team in the Raleigh Rattler, the school yearbook, also appear in the photograph that ran in The N&O.

The only player identified in the photograph is Jim Denmark (far left, second row).
