WINSTON-SALEM -
Shawn Sidbury ran for two touchdowns, recovered a fumble and had an interception as Wilmington Hoggard blanked Winston-Salem Mount Tabor 28-0 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A championship game on Saturday.
Quarterback Mark Crecco and Saquan Coggins had TD runs for the Vikings (15-0), who secured a perfect season and the first state football title in school history.
Mount Tabor (12-4), playing 10 minutes from its campus on Wake Forest University's home field, trailed just 7-0 late in the third quarter. But Hoggard exploded for three TDs in less than eight minutes to win going away.
"Just like we've done all playoff long, we started slow on offense and sputtered at times," said Hoggard senior offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper. "But our defense held us in there, and we just kept pounding, pounding, pounding. They couldn't stop us."
Sidbury, named the game's most valuable player, rushed for 73 yards on 21 carries. That included a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter and a 3-yard scoring run as the Vikings pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Doubling at cornerback defensively, Sidbury recovered a fumble by Mount Tabor's Hunter Furr in the end zone, allowing Hoggard to take a 7-0 lead with 4:26 remaining in the third quarter.
Sidbury capped his day with a 71-yard interception return, setting up Coggins' 2-yard run that closed out the scoring with 4:23 left. Sidbury added eight tackles for good measure.
"He's a tremendous football player," Hoggard coach Scott Braswell said.
Coggins led the Vikings' rushing attack with 90 yards, and Crecco connected with wide receiver Luke Caldwell four times for 104 yards. Caldwell had catches of 30 and 54 yards to set up Hoggard touchdowns.
Mount Tabor coach Barry Stewart had high praise for Hoggard's defensive unit.
"They probably had the best speed at the linebacker position that I've seen this year," Stewart said. "We're not a physical, push-you-around kind of team, so we have to rely on [our speed] to get the edge. They did a good job of taking that away."
