CHAPEL HILL - Greensboro Dudley gave the Triad 3-A Conference a sweep of both state 3-A football championships with a 28-20 victory over Charlotte Catholic in the 3-AA final at Kenan Stadium on Saturday.

Western Alamance, which won the Triad Conference title, captured the small school 3-A title in Saturday's opener.

"We've been battle tested," said Dudley coach Steven Davis. "We've shown we can play with anyone. We played Northeast Guilford twice, and had Western Alamance and everybody saw what they did today.

"That's saying a lot about the Triad 3-A Conference."

The Panthers (13-3) fed off the clutch play of MVP Ricky Lewis Jr. to their first football title in school history. Lewis threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, all on third or fourth down. He finished the game with 150 yards rushing and 196 yards passing.

Dudley's first TD tied the game at 7, Lewis scrambled for the 26-yard score on third-and-4 with 4:47 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers then went up 14-7 when Kenny Okoro pulled in a 22-yard TD pass from Lewis on fourth-and-11.

Catholic (13-3) stayed in the game with its strong running game. R.J. Sweeney capped an 11-play, 61-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run, which tied the score at 14.

Dudley came right back, though. Lewis passed to Douglas Sigmon on fourth-and-5 from the Cougar 37 to take a 21-14 lead.

Catholic moved the ball to the Dudley 5-yard line in the final minute of the first half but Joshua Jones forced a fumble that Darius Hall covered, allowing the Panthers to hold onto their lead at the half.

Lewis hit Tory Warren on a 76-yard bomb to convert a third-and-16 into a score with 9:02 to play in the third quarter. Warren was named Dudley's outstanding offensive player, while Justin King (seven tackles) received the defensive honor.

"We had some opportunities and let some opportunities get away," said Cougars coach Jim Oddo. "On third-and-16 with [a 76]-yard pass. Those were things that you hope didn't happen, and they did."

Another Sweeney TD run got Catholic within 28-20 with 2:08 to go in the third quarter. But the Cougars' offense didn't have anything left after that.

Catholic had the ball at the 50-yard line with 1:33 to play but could not convert on fourth-and-10 and Dudley was able to run out the clock.

Wes Stringfield was the Cougars' top offensive player with 48 yards rushing and 76 yards receiving. Tucker Windle had 10 tackles and picked up a most outstanding defensive player award.
